Committee Meeting Minutes for 1968

Minutes of the meeting of the Committee of the British Mathematical Colloquium, held in Charles Morris Hall, University of Leeds at 8.30 p.m. on Thursday, 4th April, 1968.

Professor A M Macbeath was elected Chairman.
Dr H C Wilkie was nominated as Secretary for 1969 and co-opted to the committee.
The minutes of the 1967 committee meeting were read and approved.
A proposal that the colloquium period be extended to four days so that all the main branches of mathematics could be given about the same amount of lecture time was rejected. It was agreed, however, that every effort be made to obtain a balance between subjects over a period of years.
It was agreed that the report of any B.M.C. meeting to the London Mathematical Society and other bodies be made in future by the outgoing secretary and not by the incoming secretary as in the past.
Mr Reeve informed the meeting that in future years the report of the B.M.C. would be published in the Bulletin of the L.M.S. and not in the Journal as at present.
After a discussion on the functions of the morning lectures and the splinter groups, it was agreed that the splinter group arrangements should not be altered but that, as an experiment, a number of simultaneous talks of a more specialist nature be arranged instead of the third general lecture on either the first or the second day. The reactions of members to this experiment should be obtained. The secretary was asked to emphasise to prospective speakers that the standard 40 minute lectures should be suitable for a non-specialist audience.
Possible speakers for the 1969 colloquium were discussed.
The drop in numbers compared with the Swansea meeting was noted.
Dr Hale confirmed the invitation to hold the twenty-second meeting of the B.M.C. at York from 7th April to 11th April 1970.
It was agreed to pay Professor Thomas's expenses if he could not obtain these from any other source.
Professor Williamson proposed a vote of thanks to the Vice-Chancellor of Leeds, Professor Ruse, Professor Goldie, Dr Wallace and others from Leeds who had contributed to the success of the colloquium. (Agreed)
