Mathematicians Of The Day

23rd November

On this day in 1823, Janos Bolyai wrote to his father, I have made such wonderful discoveries that I am myself lost in astonishment. He was referring to his discovery of non-Euclidean geometry that was published in 1833.

The postage stamp of one of today's mathematicians at THIS LINK was issued in 1982.

Quotation of the day

From Isaac Todhunter
Experimentation is unnecessary for the student. The student should be prepared to accept whatever the master told him.
