Thomas Bradwardine (c1290-1349) was born here (see above under Canterbury).

There is a plaque in the cloisters of the cathedral to Oliver Whitby, who on his death in 1702 endowed a school for poor boys To be diligently instructed in Reading, Writing, Arithmetick, and so far in Mathematical Learning as may fit them for honest and useful Employments with a particular Regard to Navigation.
