Hoole, Lancashire

Mathematical Gazetteer of the British Isles

Jeremiah Horrocks (or Horrox) (1618?-1641) corrected Kepler's calculations and predicted the transit of Venus across the sun on 24 Nov 1639. Curate of Hoole, or Much Hoole, about 8 miles SW of Preston, he may also have been tutor at Carr House nearby. In the late afternoon of Sunday, 24 November, he made the first ever observation of a transit of Venus from Carr House (from the centre window above the porch, according to tradition), while his correspondent William Crabtree observed it briefly at Broughton, near Manchester.

Thanks to an enthusiastic 19th Century rector, Hoole Church has a memorial chapel and its east window shows the sun with a symbol representing Venus.
