Hurworth-on-Tees, Co. Durham

Mathematical Gazetteer of the British Isles

Hurworth-on-Tees was the home of William Emerson (1701-1782), the noted writer of mathematical textbooks. There is a plaque on the site of his house, an Emerson Arms pub (photograph in BSHM Newsletter 36 (1998), p. 36).

There is a 1739 sundial supposed to be designed by him on the Bay Horse pub, and a 1772 sundial on 20 West End designed by Emerson's pupil C. Hunter. [1]
