Maidstone, Kent
Mathematical Gazetteer of the British Isles
In 1756, William Herschel was stationed with a regiment of Hanoverian Guards at Maidstone. After leaving the army in 1759, he returned to England and was a musician at Maidstone, composing three viola sonatas, unusual pieces for those times, one of which is dated Maidstone, 1759. [1]
