Francis Drake (c1540-1596) was probably born at Crowndale Farm, on the outskirts of Tavistock. The house is not extant, but there is a plaque nearby. There is a section on him in Tavistock Museum, Drake Road, and a statue with scenes from his life at the end of Plymouth Road which leads to Crowndale or at the western entrance to Tavistock from the Plymouth Road). The church has an hourglass stand attached to the pulpit [3]. See also Pilton.
