Captain Cook lived in Whitby for some time and the house at 16 Grape Lane where he was an apprentice has a plaque. There is a statue of him at the east end of North Terrace on West Cliff, the first statue of him to be erected. [1]

Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) spent his vacation from Oxford in summer 1854 at Whitby where he published his first two pieces in the Whitby Gazette.
