EMS Copson

The following is an extract from the minutes of the sixth ordinary meeting of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society held on Friday 7 March 1980:

E T Copson

The President, Professor T S Blyth, informed the Society of the death of Professor E T Copson in Dundee on the day following its last meeting. Referring to Professor Copson"s long association with the Society, he spoke as follows. "The Society learned with deep regret of the death on 16 February 1980 of Emeritus Professor E T Copson, M.A., D.Sc., LLD., F.R.S.E., of the University of St Andrews. Professor Copson was elected a member of the Society in 1922 and, over many years, devoted a great deal of his time in the service of the Society: as Secretary, then Editor of the Proceedings, and twice as President. The success of the four-yearly Colloquium held at St Andrews is largely attributable to his unstinting attention. At the meeting of the Society held in St Andrews on 2 June 1979, Professor Copson was, with great acclamation, accorded the rare distinction of honorary membership. The Society mourns the loss of a genial and highly respected colleague." The Society would, in due course, publish an obituary of Professor Copson in its Proceedings.
