Tullio Levi-Civita wrote to the Edinburgh Mathematical Society on 12 June 1930:

My dear Hon. Sec. of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society
Edinburgh
I am deeply indebted to the Edinburgh Mathematical Society for the great honour accorded to me by the election to an honorary fellow. I am well aware that much of this so flattering nomination is due to the benevolent initiative of my dear, eminent friend, Prof. Whittaker; but this may not but increase my gratitude towards the Society. I beg you to be authoritative interpreter of my feeling, accepting yourself my best tanks, as a member, for the election, and, as Honorary Secretary, for your very kind communication.
Believe me, Sir,
Sincerely yours,
Tullio Levi-Civita
