General Meeting Minutes for 2010

British Mathematical Colloquium
Annual General Meeting
Edinburgh, 7 April 2010

Minutes

The meeting was chaired by Michael Singer. 23 people were present. There were no apologies.

The minutes of the meeting in Galway on 7 April 2009 were circulated. There were no corrections or matters arising.

A brief report on the 2009 BMC in Galway, prepared by Ted Hurley and James Ward, was circulated and approved. (See below)

On behalf of the University of Sheffield, David Jordan invited the BMC to
Sheffield in 2013. The invitation was accepted by acclaim.

Richard Pinch (proposed by Jim Howie, seconded by Peter Giblin) was elected to serve on the BMC Scientific Committee for one year.

John Hunton reported on preparations for the 2011 BMC in Leicester.

Arrangements are well under way. Accommodation and lecture rooms have been secured. Two plenary speakers have accepted, and negotiation with others continues. Morning speakers will be invited over the summer. A novel aspect will be the replacement of special sessions by a series of 6 workshops on different areas of mathematics, each lasting two afternoons with expert organisers and small budgets. These are designed to help increase participation in the BMC.

Other business:
  • James Shank confirmed that the dates for the 2012 BMC in Kent will
    be April 16-19.
  • Stephen Huggett, LMS Programme Secretary, encouraged future BMC
organisers to make early contact with LMS to start a dialogue, both
on funding and on the format of the meeting.

A report of the 2009 Galway meeting was presented.
