Emil Gumbel was an expert in mathematical statistics and also a dedicated pacifist who risked his life trying to warn Germans of the Nazi threat. He was dismissed from Heidelberg University, his life was threatened on several occasions, but he survived to write important work including Statistics of Extremes.
