May Hickey Maria was the first woman to be awarded a Ph.D. by Rice Institute (now Rice University). After marrying the mathematician Alfred J Maria in 1938, May Maria taught at Brooklyn College. In 1958 she published the interesting textbook The Structure of Arithmetic and Algebra.
