Andrew Ranicki was a topologist who spent most of his career at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, where he was Professor of Algebraic Surgery. He contributed greatly to mathematics through his highly regarded books, his editorships, as a conference organiser, and as an outstanding teacher and thesis advisor.
