Lonnie Grafton Cross was an African American mathematician who took the name Abdulalim Abdullah Shabazz. With an outstanding record working to increase the participation of women, minorities, and individuals with physical disabilities into science and engineering, he was awarded the Mentor Award of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.
