Peter Swinnerton-Dyer was an outstanding mathematician best known for the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. He also served as Master of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University, chair of the University Grants Committee, and chief executive of the Universities Funding Council.
