Meeting of 12 June 1903

Location: Edinburgh Institution

Chair: Third, James Alexander

No papers were read at this meeting, but William Anderson Lindsay initiated a discussion on "the co-ordination of the teaching of practical and theoretical geometry".
Mr Lindsay explained how he taught these subjects in his classes. He handed out a fairly detailed syllabus, which was divided into first, second and third years.
He went over the various points in the syllabus, and laid particular emphasis on the importance of experimental verification of standard geometrical and algebraical theorems.
The members generally approved of beginning with an almost entirely practical course for the first year. Each course was to cover the main facts of the first six books of Euclid. Thereafter the course should be chiefly deductive.
