G A Gibson appointed to Glasgow University

George Alexander Gibson was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics in Glasgow University in 1909. The announcement was made in the following statement on Friday 24 September 1909:

At a special meeting of Glasgow University Court yesterday - Principal Sir Donald MacAlister presiding - Mr George Alexander Gibson, Professor of Mathematics in Glasgow Technical College, was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics in Glasgow University, in succession to Professor Jack. Professor Gibson is a native of Greenlaw, Berwickshire, where he was born in 1858, and he is a graduate of Glasgow University. He has contributed several papers on mathematical subjects to different scientific periodicals, chiefly to the "Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society," of which body he was president in 1888-9. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was a member of its Council from 1905 to 1908. The American Mathematical Society and the German Mathematical Association also claim him as a member. In 1905 the University of Edinburgh conferred on him the honorary degree of LL.D.
