H W Turnbull appointed Regius professor


Herbert Westren Turnbull was appointed Regius professor of Mathematics at the University of St Andrews in October 1921. The University issued the following statement to the Press:
ST ANDREWS UNIVERSITY.
NEW PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS.

The King has been pleased, on the recommendation of the Secretary for Scotland, to approve the appointment of Mr Herbert Westren Turnbull, M.A., to be Regius Professor of Mathematics in the United College of St SaIvator and St Leonard, in the University of St Andrews, in room of Professor Sir Peter Scott Lang, who has resigned. Mr Herbert Westren Turnbull, the newly appointed Professor of Mathematics, was born at Wolverhampton in 1885. He went to Trinity College as a minor scholar in 1906. He took his B.A. as second wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos of 1907, and won Smith's Prize in 1909. He graduated M.A. in 1911. He is a member of London Mathematical Society and Fereday Fellow of St John's College, Oxford, 1919. As a lecturer he has held appointments at St Catherine's College, Cambridge, at Liverpool University, and at Hong-Kong. From 1911 to 1915 he was teaching at Hong-Kong, and from 1916 to 1919 at Repton School. He was an examiner for University and College examinations from 1911 to 1921, and at present he is H.M. Inspector of Schools in England. He has published a number of works on geometry, algebra, etc.
