William Herschel and his sister Caroline Herschel (1750-1848) lived at Datchet in 1782-1785, a house provided by the King when William was appointed Royal Astronomer. Caroline was appointed Assistant Astronomer at a salary of 50 per year, making her the first professional female astronomer. William completed a 20 ft reflector in 1783. In June 1785, they moved to Clay Hall, near Old Windsor. In April 1786, they moved to Slough.
