Duns, near Roxburgh, was supposedly the birthplace of John Duns Scotus (c1265-1308); a conservative philosopher, whose followers were downright reactionary, eventually called dunces. William of Ockham was one of his students. The [1] says several birthsites have been claimed, but that this Duns, in Berwickshire, seems most likely.
