Mathematical Gazetteer of the British Isles

Sir Thomas Savile, founder of the Savilian chairs of geometry and astronomy at Oxford, was born near Halifax, as was Henry Briggs (1561-1630) , first Savilian professor of geometry, and, earlier, first professor of geometry at Gresham College, London.

William Herschel won the competition for organist at Halifax Parish Church in 1765. He put lead weights on some of the keys to produce a fuller sound! (Richard Crossley says this is actually common practice and is sometimes specified in the score.) He moved to Halifax in early 1766, but resigned in October and moved to Bath in December.
