Thurso, Caithness

Mathematical Gazetteer of the British Isles

Sir John Sinclair (1754-1835) was born at Thurso Castle, Caithness (now Highland).

He was MP for Caithness, 1780-1784, later for Lostwithiel, Cornwall. His Statistical Account of Scotland (21 volumes, 1791-1799) introduced the words 'statistics' and 'statistical' into English. [1]; [2]
