On this day in 1884, Sofia Kovalevskaya gave her first university lecture in Stockholm. This was the first regular lecture by a woman at a research institution in any field in modern times. August Strindberg, the Swedish author, wrote in a local paper :-

A female professor is a pernicious and unpleasant phenomenon - even, one might say, a monstrosity.
