Death of Prominent Educationist.
FORMER LEITH RECTOR.
A well-known personality in educational circles in Scotland, has passed away in the death of Mr Peter Comrie, which occurred at his residence, 19 Craighouse Terrace, Edinburgh. Dr Comrie was a native of Perthshire and received his early education in Muthil School (where he became a pupil teacher), and at Morrison's Academy, Crieff. He proceeded to St Andrew's University, where he graduated M.A., B.Sc.
In 1895 he was appointed senior Mathematical master in Greenock Academy, and from there he went to Hutcheson's Girls Grammar School, Glasgow, in 1899, as head mathematical master. For a period of three years thereafter he was mathematical and science master in Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen. Coming to Edinburgh in 1904, he was head Mathematical master in Boroughmuir Higher Grade School and Junior Student Centre, and afterwards, from 1917, headmaster in Castle Hill School. In 1922 he was promoted rector of Leith Academy, and retired from that post in 1933.
For many years he took a prominent part in the affairs of the Educational Institute of Scotland before becoming its president in 1928. During his presidential year the Institute held its congress at St Andrews, and on that occasion his old University conferred on him the honorary degree of LL.D. He served for a number of years as secretary of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society and also held the office of president. On the completion of his teaching career, Dr Comrie found an outlet for maintaining his keen interest in education in the counsels of the Education Committee of Edinburgh Corporation. He was one of the co-opted members of the Committee, and his views were listened to with great regard, for he was always concerned about meeting the needs of the children and the advancement of Scottish education as a whole. Dr Comrie was a Governor of George Heriot's Trust, a member of the Edinburgh Provincial Committee, and a member of the Central Executive Committee for the Training of Teachers. Dr Comrie was a quiet and unassuming man, of a kindly disposition, and his passing will be mourned by a large circle of friends. He was 76 years of age, and is survived by Mrs Comrie.

Peter Comrie died in December 1944 and The Scotsman printed his obituary on Friday 22 December 1944.
