Mr Hardie was elected to the Society in 1918, and died in Edinburgh on March 7, 1943.
He obtained the degree of M.A. with Second-Class Honours in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, and the degree of B.Sc. of the University of Edinburgh in April 1898.
Shortly after qualifying he obtained an appointment with the Ministry of Public Instruction of Egypt as a Lecturer in Physics to the Sultania Training College in Cairo. When the University of Egypt was established, he was appointed a lecturer in that Institution, a position which he held until the time of his retiral.
He had a long and successful career as a teacher and was an Arabic scholar of some distinction. Mr Hardie had a most engaging personality, and left behind him a very large circle of appreciative friends.
