Alfred Dixon

Times obituary

The death of Professor Alfred Cardew Dixon, F.R.S., Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Queen's University, Belfast, in his 71st year, occurred on Monday at his home at Northwood, from heart failure.

The son of the Rev. G. T. Dixon, a Wesleyan minister, he was educated at Kingswood and Woodhouse Grove School, and after graduating with an M.A. at London University, he went up to Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1886, he was Senior Wrangler and was awarded the second Smith's Prize in 1888, being elected a Fellow of Trinity in the same year. He took the degree of Sc.D. at Cambridge in 1897. From 1893 to 1901, he was Professor of Mathematics at Queen's College, Galway, and was then elected to the chair at Queen's University, Belfast, which he held until 1930, receiving the title of Emeritus Professor on retirement. In 1932, Queen's University conferred on him the honorary degree of D.Sc.

The funeral will be at Oaklands Gate Methodist Church tomorrow at 11 o'clock.
