Henry Ernest Dudeney

Times obituary

Mr. Henry Ernest Dudeney, who died at his home in Lewes on Thursday night at the age of 73, was a mathematical puzzle expert, author, and contributor to magazines. A few of his publications are "The Canterbury Puzzles," "Amusements in Mathematics," "The World's Best Word Puzzles," and "Modern Puzzles." He had been in failing health for some time and was confined to bed for several weeks, but, even through his illness, he continued to write his articles for London journals. He was also a fine chess player and was for some time president of the Lewes Chess Club. Some years ago, he won the New York Chess Association's prize open to the world for a solution of Lloyd's great souvenir chess problem in 50 moves. His articles on chess and his problems are well known.

His widow, Mrs. Henry Dudeney, is well known as a novelist.
