Abraham Fraenkel

Times obituary

Professor Abraham Halevy Fraenkel, first Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and formerly rector, died on Friday at the age of 74.

Born in Munich, Fraenkel taught at the universities of Marburg and Kiel before settling in Jerusalem in 1929 and joining the faculty of the university, which had been founded four years earlier. He retired six years ago, but continued lecturing at Bar Ilan University, near Tel Aviv.

Fraenkel coupled scientific and academic activities with communal service and served in "vaad leumi," which was the representative body of Palestine Jews during the period of the British mandate. An observant Jew, he was associated with the Mizrachi Party, which is now part of the National Religious Party. His literary works on mathematics and philosophy were published in Hebrew, English, French, and German.
