Daniel Rutherford

Times obituary

Professor Walter Ledermann writes:

The sudden death, at the age of 60, of Professor D. E. Rutherford, Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of St. Andrews, will be felt as a grievous loss by his friends, who valued his loyalty and companionship. His devotion to the propagation of mathematical knowledge was unsurpassed. During most of his academic career, he lived at St. Andrews, to which he was deeply attached, as indeed he was to the rest of his native Scotland. Yet his influence extends throughout the mathematical world, not least through a number of well-written textbooks in the successful series of "University Texts," of which he was co-editor.

Rutherford was a man of many talents, an enthusiastic amateur in music and art, and a lover of the outdoor life. In his contact with people he was sincere and forthright, and always generous and ready to help in a practical way. Refugees from Nazi oppression who found their way to St. Andrews before the war (as did the present writer) will remember with gratitude what Dan Rutherford did for them and for others who became victims of persecution elsewhere.
