John Semple
Times obituary
Professor George Temple writes:
His many friends and the surviving members of the Department of Mathematics at King's College, London (1936-69) will greatly regret the death of "Jack" Semple on October 23.
As Professor of Mathematics, he should always be remembered for his part in the reform of the mathematical syllabus, for his original work in algebraic geometry, for the authoritative books he wrote (some in collaboration with his students), and for the inspiring leadership with which he carried the department through the war years when it was "evacuated" to Bristol.
He was a wonderful companion and a great friend. He showed great courage and even cheerfulness when ill health compelled him to give up golf and concentrate on gardening. His haunting Irish accent was always a great charm.
He is survived by his wife, Daphne, and two children.
