Dr. William Briggs, LL.D., D.C.L., who died recently at sea at the age of 70, was a student of Yorkshire College, Leeds, where he distinguished himself in mathematics. He was appointed to a Bute professorship in Scotland, and in his spare time devised the method of tuition which grew into the University Correspondence College, London, moving later to Cambridge, and for 45 years he directed the work of students scattered over the whole world.

Dr. Briggs graduated with honours at Cambridge in mathematics and law, and he wrote and edited numerous textbooks, while his treatise on the law of international copyright won him the degree of LL.D. at Cambridge. He established his own printing and bookbinding works at Foxton, near Cambridge. He was also the founder of University Tutorial College, London, primarily intended to supplement correspondence teaching in science subjects. He held high rank in Masonry and was a great traveller.

He leaves a widow, two sons, and three daughters.
