Emeritus Professor William O. Kermack, F.R.S., who occupied the chair of Biological Chemistry at Aberdeen University for 17 years, has died at the age of 72.

Kermack had been blind for 46 years. He lost his eyesight after a laboratory explosion while he was engaged in research in 1924, the year he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. At the time, he was in charge of the Chemical Department of the Research Laboratory, Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh.

He retired from the chair of Biological Chemistry at Aberdeen two years ago, but continued working part-time.
