History of Astronomy Index page

If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants. - Sir Isaac Newton

Astronomy and mathematics have been intimately linked throughout history, and nearly 600 astronomers feature in the MacTutor history of mathematics archive. Grouped with geometry, arithmetic and music, astronomy formed the quadrivium of a medieval masters degree, based on the second level of the curriculum outlined in Plato's Republic. Astronomers rely on mathematics for handling their data, and developments in mathematics have been prompted by astronomical problems.
