Corsock, Stewartry of Kirkcudbright

Mathematical Gazetteer of the British Isles

Corsock has two mathematical connections nearby. Jane Carlyle, wife of Thomas Carlyle, inherited a farm at Craigenputtock, a few miles north of Corsock, where she and Thomas Carlyle lived in 1828-1834.

And a few miles south is Glenlair, the family home of James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), now a burnt-out shell from a fire in 1929. Clerk Maxwell is buried alongside his parents and wife in the churchyard at Parton, some miles south-west of Corsock.
