Cranleigh, Surrey

Mathematical Gazetteer of the British Isles

Cranleigh is the site of Cranleigh School, where G. H. Hardy's father taught. Hardy was born here, in 1877, in a house across from the school. In c. 1881, the family moved to Mt. Pleasant, a house near the new preparatory school off Horseshoe Lane which Hardy's parents supervised. Hardy attended the school until 1890. Hardy's parents, Isaac and Sophia, are buried in the parish churchyard.
