On this day in 1598, John Dee demonstrated the solar eclipse by viewing an image through a pinhole. Aubrey says he showed it to the Polish ambassador. Dee's Diary only contains:-

... the eclipse. A cloudy day, but great darkness about $9\large\frac 1 2$ minutes.
