Mathematicians Of The Day

26th April

On this day in 1892, Hermite wrote to Stieltjes: -
You state this result and then try to mortify me by saying that it is easy to prove. Since I can't succeed in doing it I appeal to your good nature to help me out of this difficulty.
The postage stamp of one of today's mathematicians at THIS LINK was issued in 1989.

Quotation of the day

From Ludwig Wittgenstein
Even when all the possible scientific questions have been answered, the problems of life remain completely untouched.
Quoted in Des MacHale, Wisdom (London, 2002).
