Mathematicians Of The Day

7th December

On this day in 1592, Galileo gave his inaugural lecture and began a period of 18 years at the University of Padua, years which he later described as the happiest of his life.

A (personally designed) stamp of one of today's mathematicians is at THIS LINK.

Quotation of the day

From George Darwin
A mathematical argument is, after all, only organized common sense, and it is well that men of science should not always expound their work to the few behind a veil of technical language, but should from time to time explain to a larger public the reasoning which lies behind their mathematical notation.
In The Tides and Kindred Phenomena in the Solar System (1898)
