Mathematicians Of The Day

7th December

On this day in 1592, Galileo gave his inaugural lecture and began a period of 18 years at the University of Padua, years which he later described as the happiest of his life.

A (personally designed) stamp of one of today's mathematicians is at THIS LINK.

Quotation of the day

From James Whitbread Lee Glaisher
[Lord Brougham's writings on the bee's cell contain] as striking examples of bad reasoning as are often to be met with in writings related to mathematical subjects.
Quoted in D'A W Thompson On Growth and Form (Cambridge 1917)
