Mathematicians Of The Day
6th May
On this day in 1996, Volodymyr Petryshyn killed his wife Arcadia with a hammer. After making a mistake in a proof he feared that he would be ridiculed by his fellow mathematicians and while under the strain of this, he had a complete mental breakdown. He was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity. He later published Development of mathematical sciences in the Ukraine in Ukrainian in 2004.

Quotation of the day
From André Weil
Rigour is to the mathematician what morality is to men.
