On this day in 1966 Stephen Smale received the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow for his work on dynamical systems. Ten days later on the steps of Moscow University he made a speech condemning American military activity in Vietnam and Soviet military involvement in Hungary.
