Mathematicians Of The Day

16th August

On this day in 1966 Stephen Smale received the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow for his work on dynamical systems. Ten days later on the steps of Moscow University he made a speech condemning American military activity in Vietnam and Soviet military involvement in Hungary.

The postage stamp of one of today's mathematicians at THIS LINK was issued in 2000.

Quotation of the day

From Arthur Cayley
Not that the propositions of geometry are only approximately true, but that they remain absolutely true in regard to that Euclidean space which has been so long regarded as being the physical space of our experience.
