Mathematicians Of The Day
24th September
On this day in 2017, Maryna Viazovska was given a Clay Research Award in recognition of her groundbreaking work on sphere-packing problems in eight and twenty-four dimensions. In particular, she proved that the lattice is an optimal solution in eight dimensions.
The postage stamp of one of today's mathematicians at THIS LINK was issued in 1948.

Quotation of the day
From Girolamo Cardano
To throw in a fair game at Hazards only three-spots, when something great is at stake, or some business is the hazard, is a natural occurrence and deserves to be so deemed; and even when they come up the same way for a second time if the throw be repeated. If the third and fourth plays are the same, surely there is occasion for suspicion on the part of a prudent man.
