Mathematicians Of The Day

12th October

On this day in 1894, George Bruce Halsted, president of the Texas Academy of Science, gave his inaugural address on Original research and creative authorship: the essence of university teaching. When he criticised the University of Texas regents for being political appointees he was dismissed from his post in 1902.

The postage stamp of one of today's mathematicians at THIS LINK was issued in 1992.

Quotation of the day

From Edwin Abbott Abbott
Yet I exist in the hope that these memoirs ... may find their way to the minds of humanity in Some Dimensions, and may stir up a race of rebels who shall refuse to be confined to limited Dimensionality.
